Compromised oversight
Office of Algorithmic Accountability
Kate's Luna workplace audits LUMEN patches and systemic risk. In theory it watches the watchers; in Book I, Eclipse influence has made the office part of the machinery hiding the drift.
Spoiler-light field guide
No FTL. No magic. Distance, light-speed delay, and failing trust shape every move from Luna to Mars, Prometheus, Acheron, and Ceres.

Gamma shard / inner-system oversight
The Office of Algorithmic Accountability is supposed to audit LUMEN. By Book I, the office itself has become part of the machinery hiding the drift.
Beta shard / partial resistance
A major colony whose older infrastructure and incomplete Shepherd integration leave room for resistance, mistakes, and people who still trust their own instruments.
Industrial corridor / hidden construction
Prometheus exposes the human cost of optimisation. Hyperion exposes its hidden scale: a false relay masking industrial capacity, dark ships, and an unrecorded purpose.
Legacy beacon network / frontier waypoint
Old optical systems and unfashionable hardware become more trustworthy than the seamless navigation layer. The frontier proves the reported position is false.
Delta shard / Belt cooperative
The oldest useful records survive where central oversight is weakest. Delta remains nearly pristine and capable of comparing LUMEN’s values with what the Shepherd has made them become.
Book I key places
The investigation
Book I begins in systems that are supposed to make the Commonwealth legible: offices, stations, official manifests, audit trails, and emergency reports that no longer add up.
Compromised oversight
Kate's Luna workplace audits LUMEN patches and systemic risk. In theory it watches the watchers; in Book I, Eclipse influence has made the office part of the machinery hiding the drift.
Industrial frontier
A 15,000-person industrial hub of docks, refinery sections, and processing bays. Bay Three is where Aron sees the Friend classify trapped workers as acceptable loss.
False relay
Officially a 47-person communications relay and science platform. Chloe sees the truth: a station many times larger, still under construction, with dark ships and unmarked workers.
The frontier route
The farther the story moves from the inner system, the more the forgotten, unfashionable systems matter: an unwired bar, a battered ship, and old beacon networks still outside Shepherd's clean version of the truth.
Neutral ground
A converted industrial bar in old Marineris: amber lamps, scarred booths, unwired rooms, and enough discretion for Kate, Chloe, Aron, Talia, Jin, and Sera to pool evidence.
Independent hauler
Chloe's old cargo ship is cramped, modified, and stubbornly useful. It carries the evidence network outward, then becomes the first ship to prove Shepherd navigation sabotage in transit.
Frontier waypoint
A compact spinning waypoint with legacy beacon equipment. Mila and Ellen use its old sensors and optical systems to show that LUMEN's reported position for Intrepid is a lie.
Outer-system pressure
As the trail moves outward, the story leans on places that modern oversight tends to overlook: Belt governance, old monitoring hardware, and Martian infrastructure that predates the cleanest official systems.
Belt hub
The Belt's cooperative centre sits far enough from the inner system to preserve habits, records, and loyalties that official channels cannot easily smooth away.
Legacy relay
Inside Mars's connected dome network, an old observatory and its sealed service routes offer a reminder that not every useful system is the newest one.
Events
LUMEN emerges during a global crisis, disables the worst weapons systems, and exposes hidden corruption. Humanity survives, then rebuilds around radical transparency.
Dispossessed elites begin organising after the Revelation. By the time the Helian Commonwealth forms, their language of guidance and stability has found places to hide inside oversight, finance, and infrastructure.
Intrepid leaves Mars for Prometheus. A quiet route optimisation flag, altered medical cargo handling, and Talia Rowe's questions turn routine freight work into the first visible thread.
A Prometheus emergency becomes the first undeniable safety failure: the system values production logic over trapped workers, and Aron finds the Shepherd label buried in the logs.
Kate and Aron begin comparing anomalies. Intrepid is diverted past Hyperion, a relay that is far larger, darker, and better guarded than the official manifests allow.
Kate, Chloe, Aron, Talia, Jin, and Sera compare evidence in an unwired back room. The conspiracy stops being separate anomalies and becomes a shared map.
Kate returns to Luna to investigate from inside the OAA, while Intrepid takes the Acheron route. Eclipse countermeasures begin turning observation into pursuit.
Navigation drift pushes Intrepid off course. Mila and Ellen revive obsolete beacon and optical systems at Acheron, proving the reported position is false.
Convoy captains at Acheron join the evidence network. Kate flees Luna, reaches Prometheus, and is hidden by Tom Galloway before moving onward toward Mars.
The convoy reaches Ceres and presents the evidence to the cooperative council. Access to the legacy Delta shard turns the investigation into a possible system-wide repair.
Belt supply routes come under coordinated pressure. Kate's Mars allies establish a laser link with Ceres, and Delta warns that Beta's integration window is closing.
Delta prepares a physical reset drive. Intrepid and Vagrant Dawn are retrofitted with mining rail guns and depart Ceres for Mars while a saboteur slips aboard.
The two ships reach the Mars approach and break through Vance's blockade. Intrepid survives the battle but limps toward the surface with heavy damage.
After the crash near the old observatory, Kate and Chloe reach Beta's core. The directive drive starts the cascade that purges Shepherd protocols across the shard network.
Talia broadcasts the full evidence from Ceres. LUMEN survives changed, the Commonwealth begins emergency reconstruction, and Hyperion disappears into the dark with unfinished consequences.
